Leaking Hydraulic Pump Fix

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Thu Jul 23, 2015 1:57 pm

Hey guys....its been a while I know and it is just tough for me to visit with my new job. Hope everyone has been doing ok and that I haven't missed much.

I have 3 hydraulic pumps I need to repair that have issues with the fluid leaking by the shaft (common problem). One of the pumps has the oil seal and the other two has an o-ring. The shafts have a considerable groove....or two. I was told and have read where a wear sleeve (aka speedi-sleeve) can be used on the shaft. Are these sleeves going to typically be the same size for the Super A - 140 hydraulic pumps or will a different size be used depending on the pump? If the same can be used, I can order them online much cheaper and easier than going to Napa (23 miles away).

Secondly, how would the shaft fit back together in the pump with the wear sleeve on? There is a bronze (or brass) bushing of some sort it also has to fit through before contacting the oring or seal.
Does this bushing have to be drilled? Does the case have to be drilled to clear the oring or seal? Do I use a different size oring or seal when using a wear sleeve? Does the shaft itself need to be turned down by a lathe and then a wear sleeve installed to match the original diameter in order for it to work properly?
I'm just going through the possibilities that are in my head and trying to figure out how I can rebuild these pumps so they'll work right again. One of the pumps belongs to a local guy that I agreed to repair it for him, and was on his Farmall 140. It is also considerably different looking (the case looks larger). It is the one with the oil seal I think.

Please provide me with any input or information that you guys have experienced.
Regards,
Chase

The one with the seal is easy, the new seal will be thinner than the original so it can easily be installed so it does not ride in the groove. The ones with o-rings are going to be harder to fix. I do not believe there is enough room for a speedi sleeve to work. I have found that using a Dremel Abrasive Buff wheel and going around and around the shaft to smooth it usually lasts for several years, with the groove still visible, but smooth. The Buffs can be used with the E-Z Lock or standard Dremel mandrel.

I encountered the same issue. This worked for me.

I am going to post pictures of the 2 different pumps I was talking about. They both have the oil seal for the shaft.

This pump seems to be in the best condition of the 2. This is the one I let the guy have and he brought it back and said it leaked like his old one. This pump looks to be the old style, and is common to the other pumps I've seen.

Like I said that was the better of the 2 pumps (a take-off from a Farmall C parts tractor). The pump I am posting next is a different style I haven't seen before. It also has the lip seal style on the shaft, but the pump looks like a "newer version" or something. This pump came off this guys Farmall 140 tractor, and he gave it to me in exchange for the other pump. I was going to rebuild this one for him, but it looks ROUGH.......not to mention the different parts that I'm unsure about.

I apologize for so many pictures. I just wanted you guys to see everything and be able to help me identify what I've got and how I should fix it. I also thought this post with the pictures would help out others in what issues to look for. I will say that I would recommend clicking each picture to make it bigger on your screen. You really can't see the details (especially the 2nd pump) very well with the standard size pictures displayed as default. Click them and take another look and you'll see what I mean by it looking rough.

I have the Type A pump and I just replaced the seal in it and now its worse that it was. Replaced it last week. It was fine for the day after I replaced it. Today the hydraulics didn't respond, the engine oil is way past the 2nd petcock and the TC reservoir is empty. Now I've got to tear into it again and I know I put that seal in properly....
