I have a 1940 farmall a with some kind of repair on the block. If it was cracked what would have caused it

Freeze crack. It probably isn't structural. If it isn't leaking, probably best left alone.

Either the coolant was plain water, or didn't have enough antifreeze in it.

Common freeze crack. As Jim said, if it doesn't leak leave it be. Nothing to worry about.

even if it leaks slightly, they make a sealer you can put in it . The only down side is the sealer goes and coats all the water passages and that reduces the cooling of the water so it might cause it to run hotter than it is now. But as long as it still cools enough to work and seals the leak its better than a new block or buying a new engine
