stock battery location on 44 A
just curious as to the proper location of the battery on the 44 A I thought it went under the gas tank, mine however is under the seat. my A was redneckified with a home made hydraulic system well before I bought it, one of the arms for the system runs right under the fuel tank where I think the battery should be. A lot of people assume it has power steering for some reason.

Behind the dash/steering column. Battery box recommended, but optional.

I believe the battery goes between the steering post/instrument panel and front of the gas tank, like a Super A. IMO that is one major design screw-up on these tractors, they should have put the battery under the seat, like a Cub, so you can actually get at it!

I have to disagree on that Al. Consider how often you actually remove and replace a battery. I just replaced (about a month ago) my old 6v on the Super A that came with the tractor when I bought it about 2 years ago ( have no idea how old that battery was either). I don't tend my batteries either and I leave them in the cold, although tractor sees most work in winter.
That being said, having spent many many hours cultivating on 2 Cubs (yellow square, red round) the lack of space under the seat is stupid. The little toolbox you get sucks, its too small to hold any tools you might need to fix/readjust cultivators in the field. And, on the yellow one especially, the lack of a flip up seat makes it even worse. The yellow one I'd have to lift the cushion off to get at any tools that were too long to pull up and out of the box sideways.

Yes, but when you do it's a giant pain in the $@@ . You need another set of hands to hold the clutch down, hold the TC control rod up, and then slide the box out, all while trying to avoid scratching the paint. The two piece box is better in that you don't then have to turn it upside down to get the battery out of the box, but I can see why a lot of farmers just left the box off and slid the battery in. IH could have centered the box under the seat and I don't think it would affect foot/leg room. And of course the gas tank makes it almost impossible to service the battery, or at least that last cell when you need to check/add electrolyte, unless you do the four-handed maneuver again and take the whole thing out.
