Decals on left side of Super A gas tank?

Postby Super A » Mon Dec 14, 2015 3:23 pm

I am getting ready to order the decals for Old Ugly, in looking through some old literature and archive photos, there are two decals that deal with the Touch Control on the left side of the gas tank, below the "bead" on the tank. I checked Guy Fay's Originality Guide and didn't see a listing for them (although I may have missed it--it was very early) so I'm trying to figure out when they were first used. I know the early tractors didn't have them, and I'm thinking they came into use in late '50 or so based on this photo. Old Ugly is a late '50 and it has the regulator below the generator like the tractor in the pic below. Anyone have an original tractor with these decals on it, and if so what year is it? Or, does anyone know when IH started using these?

thanks,
Al

The Hydraulic Lift Oil Level decal (1001348R1(English)) is shown on the Super A left side diagram on page 130 of Fay/Kraushaar Originality Guide. It is called out in the list of decal part numbers under "Super C Decals and Placement" on page 133 of that book. A note on that page under Super A-1 states that the "Super A-1 decals were identical to Super A decals, except for the air cleaner and pressurized cooling system decals, which were the same as the Super C". No dates are given. That is as close as I can get to verifying the Super A location. Any decal that may have been on my Super A has been long gone.

Based on Guy Fay's comments, that picture has to be of a tractor from mid-'49 through '51. It has "McCormick" and "Culti-vision". Note that it has a voltage regulator, putting it 286,222 (April 1950) or above. The Feb-Mar 1950 Harvester World has a demo Super A on the cover. Hard to see but appears to not have the decals (may have the forward one). All the pictures I have seen (and what I recall) the forward one was put farther back than the diagram in Fay's book shows. Another picture from WHS helps a little. It is also '49-51 as a "McCormick" and "Culti-vision" tractor. But it is pre-voltage regulator and has neither decals.

I don't know if the rear decal is identical to the Cub version, but could be. Here is the Cub version from TM Tractor.

Did anyone have any luck finding anymore information on this post regarding the correct placement of the decals on the left hand side of the gas tank? I have a late 1950 super a that I am painting and would like to know more.

I have an original Super A and though you can't read one of the decals, you can tell where they go. Send me a PM and I'll take you a pic.

The thread you placed your 1st post in is almost 4 years old. Good for you that Al is still a frequent member here!

By the way: Welcome!

Take some time and read through a few threads to acquaint yourself with the Forum:

After your 2nd post on the Forum, you'll have access to all the free PDF Manuals. They are located via "Quick Links" in the upper left corner of your screen. Hit that and a pull-down appears where you'll find "PDF Manuals". Through that link, you'll be able to download an Owner's Manual (very strongly recommended) and any service manuals that interest you. Implement Manuals are also available.

Take some pictures of your tractor and post them (in a new thread). We’d like to see it.

Glad you joined us.

Thanks for the pics Al, but do you know if that one on the left (is it the same as the yellow one Jim showed on the cub?) My SA was built in early July 1950 and I painted her but need to see were all the decals go. Also any tips on where to find the correct "RIBBON" cultivision SA decals. I can only find them in Mylar @ maple hunter. Was trying to find vinyl but all of them are incorrect size ribbon for the SA that I've seen... I could see if I could get just the SA decal and either get the vinyl set and use it or have it made in vinyl.

Not sure if they are the same or not.

On the ribbon decals, I'd buy the mylar ones and find a place locally to reproduce them in vinyl.

Be aware that "CULTIVISION" at the bottom should be white, not black.
