oil pump

Postby RanchsA » Thu Mar 24, 2016 10:15 am

Hi all. My "new" block for the A is finished being cleaned and the crank is polished. Have new bearings/rings ready to roll. I'm wondering are there any recommendations for the oil pump. Should this be replaced or is there a way to test/rebuild it?
thanks
randy

The bottom plate of that oil pump tends to warp. The warpage can produce excessive end clearance of the gears and even allow the gasket to blow out. Use a flat surface and some sandpaper to lap in the cover until it is again perfectly flat. If you have nothing else very flat, a piece of glass will work. Move the part in a figure 8 pattern until it is flat. Other than the bottom plate, there is rarely a problem with the A oil pump.

Thanks for the response Jim. Just want to make sure I'm looking at the right piece. We are talking about the mating surface on part number 2 in the diagram correct?
Thanks randy.

Thanks Jim. This will be my next task. I was able to get the crank, cam and pistons in over the weekend. Hopefully will be good as new when we are done.

Sorry one more question. I've cleaned up the oil pump and sanded down the bottom plate. Should I pack Vaseline or anything in the pump to help with priming? I read in a few places on other pumps guys recommended it. Just wondering if it was necessary here?
Thanks again
Randy

Not on a Super A-140. The pump doesn't need to be primed. Just splash some motor oil on it if any parts that would otherwise be wet with oil are dry. Just to avoid a moment of non lubrication before the oil starts flowing.
