Clutch

Postby RanchsA » Sat Apr 09, 2016 1:05 pm

While waiting on parts I've gotten to work splitting the tractor to remove the old engine. I have 2 different clutches I've found wondering if one is better than the other design wise? The first came with the motor originally belonging to the B. The second off of the A. I plan on replacing the pilot bushing, clutch disc and throwout bearing. Fork looked good. Anything I'm missing?
Thanks randy

You have 2 of the 3 different types of clutch assembly options that came on the Farmall A/B tractors. Whether these are original to those tractors or not is anyone's guess, who knows what may have happened in the past 70 years. The first photo is a Rockford clutch assembly(pt# 56620DA). The second is a Atwood clutch assembly(pt# 62600DAX). These can be viewed on pages 80-82 of the Farmall A-B Parts Catalog TC-26F. This parts catalog can be downloaded from this site's PDF Manuals section in the Farmall A-B file. The IH service manual is also available for the A-B. One thing the Parts Catalog makes clear is that components from the Rockford and Atwood clutch assemblies are not interchangeable. Others may chime in on which assembly they think is best, but if it were mine I would use the one that I knew was a good working clutch. That would be the one I was using before the engine swap. I would do the same thing with the flywheel.

Thanks Jeb.
Just dropped the clutch off. He is going to get it all up to par for me. I took in the Atwood assembly since that was the one off of my running tractor. At a quick glance said it looked pretty good. But he will rebuild and resurface everything. He is getting me the bearing and bushing as well so that was easy. Hopefully we can get this whole unit buttoned up in the next few weeks. Need to tear apart the steering box next to see if I clean up the up and down play on the shaft next.
Thanks again.
