replacement H4 coil. What to do about a missing core?

Postby havoc1482 » Thu May 05, 2016 3:27 pm

So I bought a new coil for my H4 magneto and it has no core. It was suggested that I have to remove it from my old one. How does one go about doing that? My old one is all like tarred up and there no way to remove it short of cutting open the old one, completely destroying it in the process. My concern is that my old coil worked until it was hot and I'd hate to ruin it and find out that the new one doesn't work and then I can't even move the tractor.

There is one on eBay with two days left at $9.99 + $10.00 shipping. May not find anything cheaper than that.

You might try heating the sealer up with a torch and scrape off all you can then see if gas will melt the remaining goo off.---- then press or drive the core out, but be gentle with the hammer and don't mushroom the segments. thanks; sonny

I bought a salvaged mag from a Continental Y69 or Y112 engine (seller didn't know) and tore out the coil and cut it open with a hand metal saw and proceeded to unroll the copper. Finally got the core out, cleaned it up on the wire wheel and put it in the Brillman replacement coil I purchased. I put it in the Super A and BAM! It fired up on the first snap of the impulse coupling with NO CHOKE!

I still have my old coil, I'll keep on the shelf because it will still work in a pinch and I'd just hate to get rid of that little piece of early 20th century electrical voodoo magic
