Touch control; mixed internals?

Postby havoc1482 » Mon May 23, 2016 8:50 pm

So I was putting the new o-rings in my touch control for the rebuild and I was scratching my head at Steiner's instructions.

They gave me 10 of these blue o-rings. 2 are for the pump, and depending on what style of block, you either use 4 or 8 more. Well when I disassembled I only removed 6. Here is where I think someone rebuilt this unit using a parts block.

If all 4 of these were double o-ring types I would have used the 8, and if they were all single type I would have used 4. I think someone may have used a set of doubles and a set of singles which is why I ended up only using 6 o-rings.

My unit does not have the inspection plate on the top so I believe it is the older style .

Or, you may have a block that was assembled at the factory with mixed parts during a transition period. IH was famous for using up old supplies of parts as long as they were compatible, rather than throwing them away.

I don't think so. This tractor is a 1948, and the casting code on the TC block also indicates 1948 (R). The TC was first introduced on the Super A and C in 1947 and 1948 respectively. At that point in time the factory would have only been working with one type

Well I can tell you this, I just put the unit back on the tractor and WOW! What a difference! The rockshafts follow the levers within like +/- 1 degree. The moment I put even the slightest pressure on the lever I can see the rockshaft on the TC starting to creep and it stops when I stop. None of that "playing catch-up" like it used to.

There were lots and lots of changes going on to the TC unit in the 1948-49-50 period. If you can find a print copy of TC39C you wouldn't believe all the serial number breaks.
