new 140 and couple questions

Postby jdeere86 » Sun Oct 16, 2016 11:14 am

picked this girl up couple weeks ago --- just put aftermarket 3pt hitch conversion on ---think she'll have any trouble with pto potato digger? also how are 140s with disc harrows ?? been using rototiller on the deere to do under cover crops ..thought some discs be better

had gas sitting in it for while ---added fresh gas and sea foam to get her going ....ran her for long enough now that I think all old gas is thru ....cleaned some sediment from bowl couple times

beyond changing all oils and possible radiator fluid anything else I should be doing?? also got to find out what year she is ..can't seem to match a serial number to the book

The serial numbers listed in the book are the FIRST serial number for the year, not the only serial number.

There's also a transition where the tractors ceased being "Farmall" and began being "International." Not sure if that was in 1964 with the Cubs or in 1975 when the Farmall name was dropped on the 66 series tractors.

Here's the list for both Farmalls and Internationals.
1958: 501
1959: 2011
1960: 8082
1961: 11168
1962: 16637
1963: 21181
1964: 25387
1965: 28408
1966: 31285
1967: 34818
1968: 37352
1969: 39906
1970: 42300
1971: 44424
1972: 46605
1973: 48507
1974: 50720
1975: 54273
1976: 57773
1977: 60839
1978: 63111
1979: 64544

When the 140 got the big "INTERNATIONAL" stickers, "FARMALL" didn't go away. It changed to smaller letters on the 140 sticker. I think the last 140s still said Farmall. I think "McCormick" went away when they went to the big "INTERNATIONAL" stickers.

"McCormick" still appeared on the 140 up to 1979, but it was on a small sticker (red with white letters) centered at the top of the dash.

I've attached a picture an all original late 1978 model & a 1968 model that shows this decal.

How about that. I haven't spent enough time around 140s.

I always thought it was an odd place for that decal and wondered why they bothered to use it given the abstract placement. I haven't found a reproduction of the decal to use on tractors that I've refurbished although it would be nice to keep the originality around. Wouldn't be too hard to have some made up.

and the "J" means it had a Rockford "heavy duty" clutch....originally. It is possible it could have been changed to a different type since it was new.

Fun fact: The 140 was the last IH tractor to have "Farmall" on the side, albeit in small letters.
