The year of your tractor is usually determined by the tractor serial number, stamped into a small plate riveted to the left seat support. If that is missing, you can "guestimate" the year with the average of the casting dates of individual housings, such as shown in your second photo: 9 11 Q (I thnk) If you click on the link for TM Tractor Parts below (a site sponsor), then on Identify Your Tractor, then Casting Date Table, Q = 47. So picture #2 = Sept 11, 1947. You should get casting dates from other pieces to find the most frequent letter.

The cast code on the engine block pictured is dated Sept. 11, 1945(9*11*O* I think it's an O). The tractor should have a serial number plate attached to the inside of left seat bracket. The engine on these tractors had a serial number stamped into the block on a flat spot just below #1 spark plug(the one closest to the radiator). If the tractor has the original left seat bracket and original engine, these numbers should be the same. Based on the cast code O this engine could have been on a late 1945 or an early 1946 tractor. A serial number is a much more accurate way to date the tractor.

It looks more like an "O" casting code which would make it a 1945. The serial number will nail it down.
It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

Another thing you can note is that on the A's made in Chicago if the plate is missing from the seat support, as was the case with one of mine, the Chicago plant stamped an identical serial # into the upper portion of the engine block.
That practice was discontinued after '47 when production was moved to Kentucky.

earlier A's (don't know which ones) had the serial plate attached to the foot pedal cover.
