12v conversion questions

Postby jefscoupe » Mon May 22, 2017 9:13 am

I've searched the archives and can't find the answer to this question:
If I convert my 48 Super A to 12v neg ground, will the stock starter still turn the correct direction?

Shouldn't matter if it's positive or negative ground it will still turn the correct way.

Thanks.
I ask this because when playing with small D.C. motors as a kid, when I reversed the polarity the motor turned the opposite way.
I assume it has to do with the way the motors are made, wound and whatever.
I ordered a stock starter (with fingers crossed) and it should be here in a few days.
I have a one wire alternator and wiring harness already.
Hope to get a chance to work on it soon.
I may have more questions coming.
Thanks again!

I remember when I was a kid I had a plug in clock that ran in reverse if you flipped the plug in the socket.

stock starter, fingers crossed

If your worried about the the stock 6v starter holding up to a 12v system don't.
I have a Cub and '46 A that have been converted to 12v and they're fine. I rebuilt the Cubs starter a couple of years ago but I don't think being run with12v had anything to do with its failure.
It was a worn out mess. 6v 12v, it was on its way out either way. It's been fine since and along with the A they both get used regularly.

This has me wondering why the starter doesn't run backwards. I know it doesn't, but I had an erector set too! John
