Super A fluid levels

Postby Big Mike » Fri Jan 26, 2018 7:27 am

Can someone explain the petcock and horizontal dipstick on my Super A oil pan? What is the correct oil capacity and how is the level checked? Anyone know the hydraulic fluid capacity? I pulled and pressure washed the engine yesterday and plan to tear it down this weekend. Pulling the old sleeves is causing me more than just a little concern. Also the throw out bearing looks bad, were they graphite or were they actually a bearing? Mine has no graphite and is bare metal in the pressure plate tabs. Thanks in advance for your help.

Oil directions for upper and lower test cock on page 23 of the Owner's Manual from link Dale Finch gave above.

If you haven't, download the Manual.

The front petcock on the oil pan is the full level. The rear petcock is the low. If no oil comes out of the rear petcock when you check it, add some until it runs out (ideally, keep adding until it just starts to drip out the front.) You add oil through the breather cap sticking out of the hood. IIRC it holds 5 quarts when full.

Hydraulic fluid capacity is 8.25 pints according to the manual. You fill it with the arms all the way back.

What's the concern with the sleeves?

I haven't seen many but every Super A I have dealt with had a ball bearing for the throwout, not graphite.

I think most were probably graphite but they could be either style. The two styles used differrent carrieers. You should be able to tell what it is/was from loooking at it.

Thanks for the information guys. I'll try downloading the manual. My concern with the sleeves is removing them from the block without damaging the block. My throw out bearing was apparently graphite but is now bare metal, it does have a grease fitting just as the graphite bearing in the 1950 cub.

It's easy to make a puller out of some pieces of metal plate and all-thread. Tighten it down, smack the bottom edge of the sleeve with a big hammer and long, big punch/drift. Tighten down, smack again. In just a few turns the sleeve will pop loose. It's a wet sleeve design so not much sleeve is actually touching the block.

Hope this helps,
Al
