Super A parts came today and I'm already confused

Postby Big Mike » Fri Feb 02, 2018 6:05 pm

Got the Super A base engine kit from Steiner today. I unpacked the sleeves, stuck them back in the boxes and stuck them in the freezer. Though I haven't opened the gasket set, I immediately saw some parts there that I didn't recognize and find myself once again asking for expert help. There is a felt seal of around 3/4" OD and what looks to be around 5/16" ID along with four blocks of the same material that appear to be around 3/4", They appear to be of the same material as the rear seal. I didn't remove anything like that from the engine and have no idea what they're for. There's also a squared rubber O ring of around 3" diameter that I don't recognize and a lip oil seal in the bag with the front main seal that appears to be around 3/4" OD with what looks to be around 5/16" ID (I'm assuming governor shaft?) Is there nothing that seals the top of the sleeve other than the head gasket? Sorry for the stupid questions but this is my first Super A and I want it to purr like the cub that I restored several years back. Thanks in advance for your help.

those are the rear main seals, uses several parts, no need to chill the cylinders, they should slide right in, make sure the lip on the block where the liners seat is clean and the orings are in straight and not twisted, yes the head holds the sleeves in

Thanks, maybe when I start the assembly it will become obvious to me but at this point I'm still baffled. I'll clean the spaces where the bottom O rings fit into the block and the lips in the block where the sleeves seal to the block, put a little soap on the bottom O rings and try and drive the sleeves in with a block of wood and a dead blow hammer. Thanks again.
