Paint for the Super A

Postby Big Mike » Sat Feb 03, 2018 7:03 am

I was in the local Tractor Supply store and noticed they had Farmall Red paint at around $30 per gallon. Anyone have any experience with their paint? It's certainly reasonably priced.

That paint is pretty low quality, you'd be money ahead to spend a little more for Case IH Iron Guard 2150 red paint. It'll be much more durable.

Also for cost effective way of doing it is add a catalyst or hardened which costs about 5.00 for the small container. I have found that it changes results drastically. But I guess that all depends on the quality of the restoration your going for, the case paint is the way to go if your doing a whole tractor. But I have only done partial rusterations because my tractor still had good paint on most of the tractor. I was doing the motor and grill also a newly purchased fast hitch which was used and needed some freshening up. Basically to stop surface rust from growing. When I finally redo my 3414 industrial. I will go with the case paint, that is if I ever get it started.

You get what you pay for with paint. Spend the money for good paint and you won’t regret it in a couple years.

I’ve been using the International Blue for implements. Seems to do well but haven’t really dragged stuff int the dirt much yet.

Some of us have used the Ace brand Rust Stop Int'l Blue on implements and really like it. I've had it on my 193 plow for many years and it has worn very well. I like the 15oz size and the spray tip as well. :D

For the tractor, I prefer the Case-IH 2150 red. If you're going to apply paint with a hardener, take all the safety precautions for breathing around that stuff. It can be harmful to your health.

Don't go any cheaper than the caseIH 2150 Irongard paint from the caseIH dealer. You can add some hardener in it (talk to your local automotive paint dealer--when we did my Super A we used a PPG product but I can't remember the number) and it will produce a nice, fade-free, shiny finish. I've used the Ace blue and liked it, but only on implements.
