baling with a 140? is it big enough?

Postby Indy4570 » Fri Mar 02, 2018 4:39 pm

Will a 140 handle a square baler? of the same era? the PTO is a 540rpm on the 140, the draw bar would allow and bit of an offset to compensate for the offset PTO shaft. I was mowing some dead weeds today and I feel the tractor may have enough power. I pull my baler with a 790 JD and its all it really wants to do. baling throws the tractor around a bit when the ram pushes.

It will probably handle the baler with enough "ifs" on the specific conditions. Aren't the 790 and 140 about the same power? The 140 probably weighs enough more to not be tossed around as much, but otherwise I would expect little change from one tractor to the other.

depending on where you look the engine HP listed in tractordata shows
IH 140= 28. JD 790= 30

weight
IH 140= 2700 to 3000 pounds, JD 790= 1930 to 2105 pounds

PTO HP
IH 140= (claimed): 21 hp, JD 790= (claimed): 26 hp

if it has enough PTO HP and the offset PTO shaft is doable then I will give it a shot this season, I have baled for several years with the 790 but it might be nice to not be thrown back n forth :P I do have a loader on the 790 and its 4x4, so that might make some difference. I need to widen the stance on the 140 anyway and that might give me more stability. I need the wider stance for mowing the hills. I would mow hay with it but would need to add remote hydraulics

If you have the original hitch extension plate and bolt it to the left on the drawbar, the PTO will be OK. Without the plate, a swinging drawbar set to the left will probably be close enough. Be careful about turning to short.

yes left turns are the issue. I do not have the plate or a drawbar, only the U drawbar and it has the woods on it now. it would be nice to leave the mule drive in place and only remove the mower n belt. but if I get the cub set with the kub klipper i can always mow grass with that.
