Firecraters in a 140???

I picked up a '74 140 (key start) with FH a few months ago. I did the initial fulid changes (all of them except Anti-freeze). I adjusted the valves (they needed it), and used the spark plug holes to give me a good idea when I was TDC. I noticed that there were firecrater pistons in there!! I've got a '57 230 that has them so I knew when I saw them what they were. I didn't know they did that???Anyone else seen this?? Shrps74 in VA :D

As far as I know, IH made Fire Crater pistons for everything fron the Cub/letter series on up.

Jim - Is the Fire Crater piston the same as a high compression piston? Did the Fire Crater require a new head as well?

Fire Crater was the IH trade name for their high compression domed pistons. Usually they didn't require changing the head.

By the 140s would they have come factory with the fire craters?

I think even the 140 came from the factory with flat top pistons. They may have changed the chamber size in the head.
