The 100 dies

I started mowing this AM, and she just up and quit. I checked fueld level, plenty there. Looked at the sediment bowl, has some gunk in it, so I cleaned that out. It has a large auto style filter, so I removed that. Started it up, ran for about 5 minutes and quit, like it was out of gas. Finally got her back to garage, and noticed that it will run better with the choke on. Help guys!

Gas

First thing I would do is pull the plug on the bottom of the carb to see if you have enough gas getting to the carb.

Max,

It sounds like the engine is starving for fuel. If the carb is a Zenith remove the 1/2" plug at the rear of the bowl and check for debris clogging the main jet.

There is a strainer on the end of the elbow that threads into the carburetor that s bad to stop up too. Screw the elbow out and clean it.

Strainer, what strainer

I took out the brass elbow, but there is no screen/strainer. I'm guesing a clean out/rebuild is going to be in order.

Max,

start at the fuel tank and work your way down to the carb. Sounds like a starvation issue. Once you find the problem, should be an easy fix. Good luck.

I pulled the carb of last night. Boy howdy, was that thing a mess! Luckily I have access to an ultra sonic cleaner in my lab. Question is this: It is a Zenith, #12522. According to various sites on the web, this is a replacement carb. Is this OK, ot should I be looking for a correct carb? The tractor is not a show machine, just a good working machine. I have seen rebuild kits, but the ones that I've seen on ebay show them for a Gravely. Is there any difference b/w a kit for a Gravely and Farmall? Any help appreciated as always.

If the carb is ok or can be repaired reasonably, there is no reason to replace the Zenith. It looks a little funny, but works good.

The 100 lives! I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was going on with the 100 and she not wanting to run. Sooooo, I broke down and bought the correct carb for it, and you know what. She runs like a dream again. The new carb does not have what the Case dealer called a power valve, but she doesn't seem to care. The last few days, b/w football practice for my son and cheerleading practice for my youngest daughter, I have adjusted the governor and the idle. All seems to be well. Just wanted to let you all know where it stood and to say Thanks!!

I think the ones with [ power valves ] were made to run on fuel other than gas

When i first got my int154 cub home it would stall and after a few minutes it would restart. Well it finally wouldn't restart while mowing with it. I took the fuel bowel apart and it was clean. I reassembled the fuel bowel and took the hose off the carb and opened the gas valve and still had no gas flowing. I them blew into the hose(human air pressure) and i heard a pop in the gas tank. I figure i had some hard crud above the fuel bowel inlet in the fitting. I then ran the cub out of gas to checkout the bottom of the gas tank to look for rust or dirt. Its squeeky clean and its been running great ever since. These engines run so great....

I posted this so it may help someone down the road. Its a process of elimination i started with the fuel system first before attacking the distributor/points.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

I'm fairly confident is wasn't the right carb to begin with. The only reference I could find for the carb number was for a Gravely. However, I cannot expalin as to why it ran well before sucking it full of dirt.
