I hear ya! I make two steps forward, one back, but persistance will prevail! I found a crack in my tranny case when I cleaned it real good, visited Ralph and got a replacement. When I removed the shifter plate on the original one, Ifound some gears with similar dental issues! So, I would have needed to address it any way. Hang in there, as they say, it's nothing that time and money can't fix! Good Luck!

Looking good, I have a Cub trans to do the same thing to.

Wow Ed I am sorry to see that. Good thing you decided to pull it apart now. Hopefully you can find a parts trans :!:

Yeah it's too bad I broke that gear myself. There was ice in the tranny. Anyway it's only the oil slinger. I got one lined up for $20 with a good bushing. The rest of the gears look OK. There is some wear on them, but everyone is telling me they have seen worse. I'm going to be studying some more about the wear and probably just end up swapping the oil gear. Sure is a lot of work just to get that gear out. But all new seals and maybe a few bearings.

How does one determine if a bearing should be changed, other than obvious badly worn, or damaged? These bearings all seem OK. I have no idea when someone was in the tranny last.

Ed I can say for sure I am not the one to ask. Four years ago I went through my cub trans and put in new seals and one bearing. The others seemed good. But two years ago 1st-R started getting noisy and it keeps getting worse. So now I wish I had replaced them all. I am thinking when I do do it I am going to see if I can get sealed bearing to fit it. That will keep any metal in the trans and or water from getting in the bearings. I was going to put a sealed bearing in the top of the steering gear box. But I would not have been able to fill it with oil as it has to go through the bearing to get to the steering gear.
