130 cuts off after a few seconds

Mon Jul 15, 2013 2:29 pm

Hi Guys, I have a 130 with belly mower that is used fairly often and has run well until last week when it stopped while mowing. It will start again easily but cuts off in a few seconds. Sometimes 10 sometimes 30-40 seconds. No sputtering, skipping etc. I checked fuel, cleaned strainers, removed and cleaned carb, changed out coil for one I knew to be good. Same thing happens. No matter whether hot or cold. Any ideas about how to trouble shoot this? The fact that it starts up right away makes it difficult to tell what is going on for me. Thanks for your help. John

John,

I wish I was more of a mechanic, but if I had to guess, it sounds like a fuel problem. When you said you cleaned the carb, what did you mean? are you sure the jets are good? Maybe someone else who knows a little more will come along.

Plugged gas cap vent?

Re: carb. It had been rebuilt about two years ago. After draining the bowl several times and cleaning strainer with no change, took it off and checked float and gaskets, cleaned jet with wire and cleaned with carb cleaner. No obvious issues and no change in run time. The strange thing to me is that after stopping it will immediately restart on the first turn then run a few seconds and stop. Run time varies a little but never as much as 60 sec.

I did not check gas cap vent. Will do that tonight.

Thanks

If the fuel was slow to get to the bowl either due to crud in the tank or carburetor, it would not start right back up, because it takes time for fuel to flow into the bowl...

There are other ignition parts besides the coil to change: Points, condenser, cap, rotor, wires, plugs.

Right now I think it might be the condenser.

not the gas cap vent

change the condenser.
Always do the cheapest thing first.

Well, I changed out condenser, and points. No change. It still starts right up, runs for 10 to 30 seconds and cuts off. No sputtering, no skips. It will re-start immediately and do the same thing. I have done every thing I can think of. Even drained gas tank and replaced with fresh. I bet it will be something real simple but it flys over my head for now.

Thanks, John

Not sure if this would fit your symptoms, but could the choke be stuck open?

Choke is working properly. I checked that when working on the carb. Thanks, John

Well we either have to start thinking out of the box or call a priest for an exorcism at this point...

Hot wire the coil power directly to the battery. Bypass the resistor if this is a 12V conversion.

If you can and have the familiarity to do so, you might try uploading a video to youtube and posting a link. Seeing (hearing) it might help. I know that's what I do when I'm stumped. :)

If you haven't done this yet, pull fuel line off Carb and make sure you have good fuel flow.
Sounds to me like you may have restriction. May be screen in tank ,if still there or sediment bowl screen.
Hope this helps you out.

Joel, not sure I can do that. Maybe my son can help.
Bill, I have done that. That was my first thought too. I did check strainer and sediment bowl. Gas flow seemed ok. Did not pull the valve assembly from the tank. But I think I will start there and go through everything again over the weekend. I must have missed something.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I will let you all know what happens.

Got it!! When I removed the valve/strainer assembly from the tank I found a piece of grass straw vertically in the pickup line. It would float up a little ways after gas flow stopped allowing just enough to start and fool me into thinking it was adequate flow. Then it sucked down to block the line when engine was running. Why it never floated all the way out is a mystery. I had looked in the tank with a flashlight but could not see the tiny straw. I now remember a similar thing 40+ years ago with a John Deere 55 combine and a soybean that puzzled professional mechanics for several days. Finished mowing before the next rain.
Thanks for the help.
