A couple of months ago I purchased what I was told was a Super C. The tag on the seat is not readable so I didn't have much to go on. Since then I have learned about casting codes and have found the serial number on the block. The year code on the castings is "S" and the serial number on the block 51365 so I figure it is a '50 regular C (needless to say I was disappointed).

I finally got it running this weekend, it doesn't smoke but the oil pressure is low and it doesn't seem to have much more than half throttle. Also I noticed last night that the manifold and muffler get red hot when I increase the throttle to full. I guess that I should probably do a rebuild but I'm not sure which engine it is. I read somewhere that some later C's had the Super C engine (my engine does have a water pump). Does anyone know of a way to tell?

Also, while I was pressure washing some of the grime off today I noticed that there is white paint under the red. Is there any way to confirm wheter or not this is a demonstrator? If so, should it be restored in Farmall red or white?

1950 was definately the year for the Demo's. The best way to tell is the serial number tag. Can you put a piece of paper over it and rub a pencil over it and try to get the number? There is a good chance you may have a white Demo on your hands.

That was a neat trick - I did the rubbing and the serial number on the tag is 50961. So what does this tell me?

I am not sure, but I thought I had a 130, only to find out it was a 100. Serial number matched up for both.

I just found this reference to the 1950 white demonstrator program in an exerpt from a book by Ken Updike:

"It is relatively easy to identify if you have a White Demo. One characteristic marking is the casting of the letter L on the clutch tube housing. This is typically found in an upside down position to the rest of the numbers, with the letters cast into the part."

Has anyone ever heard of this designation for demo's? Just checked the casting code on mine and it's 2 - 20 - L (only upside down, looks like a straight 7).

Yesterday I was disappointed that it wasn't a SC, now today I'm kind of excited :-)

What about the engine - shouldn't the serial numbers match? Also, why does it have a water pump? I thought that the C's were hydrosyphen like my A.

Water pumps came on quite a no. of the 113 s I have 2 Cs and one does and one does not I have 3 Super As and two do and one does not. As far as A demo, TAKE pics of the white paint if you restore it as it will be the proof of it being a demo. While it may be in the serial No. range not all were demos

That is an error in Ken's book. The L just means that particular part was made at the Louisville plant. If that was right, my 1957 Farmall 230 would be a 1950 white demo tractor.... :wink:

I know someone on this site has the Demo serial number range for the C's. Hopofully they will see this and let you know if your C falls in there or not.

The waterpump was an option and a lot of folks put them on if they worked them hard. You also need to change the head gasket at the coolant holes are different size. So hopefully they did that if they retrofitted it. Not much difference in the C and Super C. Just a little different hp and disc brakes. Gearing a little faster in the Super, but they are both really nice tractors.
