Farmall C & Super C Tractors, 1948-1954

the steering gear on our Super C is pretty bad, so we're thinking of rotating the gear, can you do that? I thought reading/hearing somewhere that you can, we've got the front axle off, do we just take the bottom "plate" off the front end and the gear also comes down? also, can I shim the bearing that the steering shaft rotates on? the bearing is pretty much junk, it grinds and clicks alot, going to get a new one, but the shaft moved frontwards and backwards alot with the nut on the shaft, should that move or stay pretty tight?
thanks for any help!

Hi Johnny, I just put new seals in mine, take out the 4 bolts on the collar in back of the plate and the hole assembly should come out of the housing, the nut in the center of the plate is on a bolt that holds the bearing assembly together there is no head on this bolt just i round flat plate with a cork gasket under the plate. I had to press the bearing and gear off the shaft to get it apart. I think you can turn the shaft and gear 180' but I think that will put the bolt holes in the plate towards the rear of the tractor instead of out front if this is not a concern it should work fine, the only thing that keeps the shaft from turning 360* are the 2 stops on the collar. Hope this helps. Chuck

thanks, we have the whole assembly in the parts washer right now, cleaned it a little last night, thanks, we'll try and pull/press the gear etc off, it has a wide front end, so will the bracket being mounted backwards cause problems? especially with the tire rods? the gear looks worn a bit, but when everything was still together the bearing up front on the steering shaft (from the steering wheel) moved in/out alot, is that supposed to happen? or should/could that be shimmed?
Thanks again
Johnny
