New to me '49 C w/trip bucket loader

Postby grasser » Wed Aug 21, 2013 6:01 am

I've really been in need of a loader tractor here on the farm.
I've been waiting for the right one at the right price to come along.
This '49 C with a loader came up on local craigslist last Thursday, and Friday night I hauled it home.
Pretty sweet unit. Starts and runs well.
I even tried my hand at hand cranking since it had one on the floor board. 1/2 crank and it fired up quick as using electric start!
Lights don't work, I'll have to look into that.
Ammeter shows charge while running, but something strange: It's still 6 volt, so I put the voltmeter on the battery. Not running=6.2 volts like normal. Running=my voltmeter was going crazy not even just jumping back and forth in a small range like on my cubs (which run like 7 or 8 volts when running).

Any thoughts? Maybe I need to Polarize the generator?
The old boy I bought it from had recently replaced the generator.

Good looking tractor!!! I will try and get a volt meter on my 6-v SC tomorrow and let you know what it says.

IIRC a jumpy needle is indication of a bad ground somewhere. Either the generator and/or the regulator are not making good contact with the frame of the tractor.

Finally had a chance to check the voltage. 6.13 with engine off. 6.44 at fast idle and needle showing charging. I used a digital meter so I couldn't tell if anything was jumping around. Hope this helps.
