Unless the bumper spring is so stuck that the cover needs to be removed to get the necessary force on it. Its a PITA to get up in there.

I turned that set screw that holds the bumper spring in about as far as it will go and still barely have enough thread for the acorn nut to go on and essentially no change.

I assume if I back the set/holder screw all the way out the bumper spring should just fall out?
All she did when she first saw it was stand there looking at it, shaking her head,
while my buddy and I stood there drinking beer, grinning over my fine purchase.

That acorn nut doesn't have to be on there. Don't worry about it.

Sounds like my tractor was. Remove the set screw, may have to pull the spring out with a pair of pliers, etc. I expect you'll find a new spring is quite a bit longer than the old one.

Yeah, if it has to screw in that far the spring is most likely damaged. Unscrew it and pull the spring. Clean up or replace as needed. You may need to use a wire to hook it out. I had one come out in 2 pieces. This can still normally be done without removing the whole governor assembly.

Thanks. I will pull it out tonight and see what I have going on, but I also think I will just order a new one. Given the rest of the long deferred maintenance on this C before I got it, I would not be a bit surprised the spring is shot.
