Oil Change Crankcase

Postby ajhbike » Mon Nov 13, 2017 7:35 am

Here is an odd thing....I removed the oil and changed the filter. I took care to clean out the groove that the filter gasket sits in and used a Wix 51172. The gasket for the wix is not flat, it has a 2mm side to it and the filter sits on top of it and presumable gets compressed somewhat when the long bolt is tightened. I tightened it down and it seemed to fit okay, but it seems like it should be more of a flat style. Meanwhile I filled up with oil being mindful of the top petcock and filled until it started to drip drop. Buttoned it up and took it for a spin around the neighborhood. It seemed to smoke quite a bit...mostly white but I figured it was because I had treated the previous oil with seafoam a couple of operating hours ago and because I had rinsed with a bit of kerosene. I got back and saw that there was oil leaking out of the driver end spark plug hole and slightly from the top of the long filter bolt.
I opened the top pet cock and it started dripping...and dripping. Apparently because it was cold, it took a while for the oil to level out so I had overfilled it. I let it keep dripping until it stopped....about a half pint or more. I checked out the spark plug and it was only half screwed in! Weird because the engine runs really well and smooth. I took it out and it was really gunked up, cleaned it off well and checked the gap and reinstalled. The long bolt is still leaking slightly and I don't want to over tighten.
Is the Wix the wrong filter? And did I screw anything up by overfilling with oil? The engine still runs smooth but I just want to check with the experts.

Your filter and gasket are correct. Did you use a copper sealing washer on the bolt?

I have to say that I didn't notice a washer when I removed it or when I put it back. I will have to check. I would say that there wasn't one before or after going off of memory. Say it isn't there...suggestion as to where to get one?...and why copper?

There should be a solid copper sealing washer between the head of the filter bolt and the top of the filter case. Same as the Cub. It is copper, so that it will crush slightly to fill the gap between the bolt and cover. They should be available at your CaseIH dealer.

Do you happen to know the size of the washer? We don't have case/ih dealers here.

You can also use a nylon 1/2” washer.
