IH 2504

Postby Joey » Thu Aug 09, 2007 11:37 am

A friend of mine has an IH 2504 Industrial, serial no. 14550, that he needs engine parts for. His main question is: Is the engine block for an IH 2504 (188 cid?) the same engine block for a Farmall 504? His other question is where can he get parts for the engine? Parts needed are crankshaft, rear, front and center main caps, timing cover, rear seal retainer and oil pump? He lists the parts number for each of these items but I'll not list them here. Contact me if you need them. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Joey,

I can't comment specifically on that model but main bearing caps must be kept with the engine they were bored for.

Here's the drill: If a cap must be replaced the replacement cap should be milled off a little and then torqued up in position. Then the engine will have to be line bored back to original size. That's the only way to assure the bearing will have proper clearance and they will all be in line.

This will all be a fairly expensive operation and will require even more work than simply replacing the engine with a good used one.

Thanks, Mr. GW. I'll pass this info on to my friend and let him take it from there. I think he had a block already from another tractor and was wondering if he could use it. Anyone else know if the IH 2504 is same as Farmall 504? Can engines from these two models be swapped?

I know very little about rebuilding an engine, except for the fact that it is not a cheap project!

It seems there was a miscommunication between Johnny and I about the engine block. The parts I stated he was needing was the parts he already has. What he really needs to know is are the pistons and rings from the IH 2504 and the Farmall 504 interchangeable? He needs to buy pistons and rings (and maybe sleeves?) for his block.

So, in a nutshell: IH 2504 and Farmall 504 same engine?

Thanks again

The Valu-bilt catalog lists the piston and sleeve assemblies for both engines as the same. There is an engine serial number split, so you need to know the engine's serial number. The ring listing does not have a serial number split.

Just under $500- for a piston and sleeve set.

Eugene,

Johnny lists the engine block number as 607487-C1. Is this the number he needs to order parts?

David,

I'm going to try to get Johnny to contact Bermuda Ken - don't want to be a go between when ordering parts. Let him tell Ken exactly what he needs. Thanks.

Engine serial number D188-1293 is the change, before and after.

Have your friend shop around for the parts needed. There can be quite a price difference.

The number 607487-C1. I don't know that this is a serial number. I'm thinking casting or part number.
