I bought some cheap fun! IH 205 combine!
I was digging around on Craigslist one day and I ran across an IH 205 combine, that he was selling for scrap. Since it was only about 3 miles away, I decided to go take a look. He told me that if I were to give him $200, I could have it. It was parked outside for 3 years, but it fired right up! It needs a $6 bearing and about 400 lbs of stuff removed to get to the bearing, but other than that, it seems fine. The engine is the same that is on an IH 460 gasoline tractor. I think it's 221 CI. The belts seem decent, aside from the separator belt, which is separating at the ribs.
Aside from that, I am going to drive it home when the weather cooperates. It's a lot of machine for $200, and I Am sure I can put it to good use this coming summer. I will plant some oats and see how she goes. As things would have it, he also had a Gleaner K in much better condition, and he said no one wanted an old machine like that, so I was able to get that from him for another $800. I have a fleet operation going now! I can't wait to run them tandem and make some noise in the valley.
I don't have a picture of the Gleaner K, but here is a picture of the IH 205. It looks a lot worse in photos, than it does in person. there is no rust through, or any rust on the separator, or straw walkers.

Super find! Looks like a lot of fun. I remember our first self-propelled combine. It had a 12 foot header and we thought we were really uptown!

hahaha! You said it, George! I have bad luck with those lil varmints!
I can't wait to run her up the road. When he said $200, I couldn't get to my wallet fast enough. He replaced the 205 with the Gleaner K, and now he is replacing the Gleaner K for a John Deere 4400 diesel this coming spring. I was lucky enough to work out a deal with him on both of these combines. The Gleaner K has a nice 13 foot bean head that has a completely rebuilt sickle on it. No corn heads for either machine, but I am going to start digging around this summer, when I get oats done. I might do some rye in the fall, and do some late soybeans when the rye comes off the field in the summer. He has had good luck with liquid fertilizer, getting 40 bpa on late soybeans. If I could get 40 bpa of late planted soybeans, I'd be one happy camper!

demolition derby?!?! Oh no!!
I have bigger plans for this!
I am thinking it needs a modernized cab. There isn't much room to work with and no insulation, but I can put an a/c unit from a Ford escort on it, and plumb in a heater core as well. I have an old Ford van with nice gray carpeting and plenty of it. I am also thinking that it needs a radio, and, oh yeah, an 80 amp alternator conversion!
Not to mention, I think it needs to be lit up like a Christmas tree at night. I will put some bin lights, some rear facing work lamps, an additional set of hazzard flashers, more cab lights, an interior dome lamp, perhaps a back-up camera with monitor... I think I need to look into a 130 amp alternator, now that I think of it! I love the side mounted grain bins. You can shift the grain from one tank to the other, so it is more stable on hillsides.
I had a few other ideas, but they aren't coming to mind right now.

Maybe I should take it on the road this summer and do some custom harvesting!
Why is everyone going to plant sunflowers? I have heard more about sunflowers than any other crop out there.

I'd be cautious about putting much into a 205. I had one back when they were new it would barely handle a 10 foot table or the 2 row cornhead. the clean grain elevator was always breaking as was the cross auger that fills the grain tank. As bad as I hate to admit it the gleaner was the better machine of the two. Had good luck with every other IH combine, just not the 205. IMHO

point well taken. I have read plenty of bad stuff about these 205 combines. Lucky for me, I have a Gleaner K to do some work with, also. If I get 15 acres of oats in the ground, it will probably only cut about half that much, so I doubt I will be straining it too hard.
