International I-4.....?

Postby Hickup » Thu Jan 22, 2009 7:21 pm

Just came across an I-4. Never seen one before and it has some big front wheels. Is it a good tractor? Comes with an 8 foot Fisher plow. Looks like a good project, but I could use some advise.

Sure they are good tractors, but what kind of shape is this particular tractor in? If it is a solid start to a project and you can afford it, jump on it!

Industrial version of the W-4, They were painted yellow and outfitted with optional equipment of the purchasers choosing.

They were sold to DPW's and highway dept's.

The larger front axle was used to support the increased wieght of front mounted equipment like loaders and plows.

They are a nice addition to a collection.

I have requested to see more pictues.. But looks good from what I can see. The big front wheels look cool. The asking price is $1500 and wasnt sure if that was a good price for it. I have never heard about an I-4 before. Does anybody know what kind of power it has? Worth using or restoring?

Here are some specs.
Manufacturer: International Harvester
Model: I-4
Type: Industrial tractor
Years produced: 1941 - 1953
Total built: 24,377
Factory: Rock Island, Illinois, USA
Original price: $1,900
These tractors have a 152 cu inch engine
Power is compareable to an M.
These are kind of neat tractors that you do not see a lot of at tractor shows. In fact I have not seen one recently.
They weigh in around 4200 lbs so not to bad to haul. $1500.00 is not bad if it is in good shape.

Yes, the big front wheels more than likely came standard. The Agricultural front axle would not hold up to the wieght and use of a loader or other heavy equipment. They were painted yellow from the factory. I would say that the majority of these tractors were well maintained in service as they were government issue. They were used to pull scrapers and other types of equipment as well as used for front end loaders. They were basicaly the same tractor as the W-4 only beefed up for heavy use. The W-4 parts interchange readily except for the industrial front axle as that was procured from a outside vendor.I think these are cool tractors and with only 25,000 built there are not alot of them out there. You see the occasional W-4 at shows put you rarely see a I-4 at shows. These tractors were pretty reliable with no peticular problems. If it is in good shape and comes with a plow, seems like a fair price
