quick hydro question

Postby grunt » Mon Feb 09, 2009 4:21 am

I have a farmall M with live hydro. It is running a JD 45 bucket. I noticed that one of the plugs down buy the hydro piston arm was leaking. So I pulled the plug and you could hear that the system was sealed because I got the pop sound from the plug. Well I put some tape on the plug and put it back on the piston arm.
My question is the owners manual states that you use the same oil as you do in the crank case to fill the hydro (10w-30). Also is the only place to fill the hydro system with oil is the oil filler/breather cap? Also what is the best way for me to bleed out the air I must of gotten in to the system when I sealed the leaky plug? I was thinking of just loosening up the plug I just sealed and working the hydro in til oil comes out of it.

I am really kind of a new bee when it comes to hydraulics. I thought it was interesting that the tractor does not use hydraulic fluid in its system.

An M does not use the engine oil to supply the hydro, it has a separate tank for that. Normally mounted inside the belly below the gas tank. Look for a filler cap there.

I might of been a bit misleading. :? I know it uses a seprate location from where it gets its oil. I was just suprised that it uses the same weight of oil as the motor.

The earlier ones (pre live hydraulics) used 10 wt. non detergent oil.

mine does have live hydro. I think I need to take a close look at the remaining oil that is in there. At least that is what I was told by the guy I bought it from. What is the diffrance between the two diffrent systems?

On the earlier H, M, etc. with the LiftAll system (non live) the pump was driven by a shaft coming back out of the front of the transmission , and the pump only ran when the clutch was up. On the live hydraulic systems the pump is mounted between the distributor and the gear that runs it, and is operational anytime the engine is running.

In that case it is live. So what fluid should I be running in it then?

Grunt - any good hydraulic rated fluid will be fine. Hy-tran is a good fluid. I'd drain what is in there and all fresh fluid rather than mix new with unknown old fluid.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Thanks. I have some hoses I need to swap out that are on there last leg. I think I will do it all at once. I am sure I will have some questions along the way.
Thanks for all your help.
I think I need to also find the manual for a JD 45 bucket. I wonder if binder has one?

Might ask about a manual in the JD section of ytmag.com
