424 Diesel hydraulics and wood splitter

Seems I may become a tractor guy yet. Got most of my cub issues resolved but am now helping a friend do some work on a 424 diesel tractor he has. We are going to change glow plugs and possibly change the hydraulic fluid. I also have a question about the hydraulic system. We would like to use a hitch mounted wood splitter with this tractor but are not sure if we have enough pump for that or not. Has anyone here done this or know where a good place to look for hydraulic system information is. Tractor runs good once you get it started and is in decent shape and we would like to use it to run a tractor mounted splitter if we can.

The 424 pump will be either 7.6 or 10 gpm. While that is still modest compared to a lot of splitters, it is several times more than the Cub pump. The same question relative to the Cub, of course, produced a long inconclusive discussion. You will only be able to use a small percentage of the engine's power, but it should work OK.

well, I am not exactly familiar with the 424 diesels aside from the fact that they are British built. As to whether or not it's hydraulic pump can handle a wood splitter? Well, ifn a Cub's 2.5gpm 2500psi pump can handle a wood splitter I imagine the 424 should be able to. How fast and how big a log it can split is unknown, but running the splitter should not be a problem.

edit: Since Jim posted - clarification - as with the Cub, if you are not concerned with speed, then how fast you split is moot. There is one Cub powered splitter in operation, it is not quick by any stretch, but it gets the job done. Same would apply with the 424 I would think. Follow the links in the google search below.

To be fair I have not even looked at the hydraulics. I know it has a 3 point hitch and has a back blade so I think I should be ok. I just cant remember whats there for hook ups now. I was told there used to be a loader for this but I have not seen it around.

You can split SMALL diameter, easy splitting species of wood, (could do it faster with maul), but could still do small amounts at the time on a casual basis!--Dont expect to do large stuff at high speed,---TRUST ME,--it aint gonna happen!

Just keep in mind that if you damage some of these pumps, repairs/replacement pumps are NOT to be found very easy, so on a personal note instead of chancing a $1,000 pump I would add a seprate hyd. pump and pto drive it,--or a 10 hp or so B & S engine! if you have enough hp to pull the pump!---that would be the way to go! thanks; sonny

I have been looking at splitters that drive from a pto pump. 25GPM at 540 rpm.

That would do some serious splitting,---just make sure that you use a large oil res. to keep the pump from getting hot or the oil cavitation and sucking air!---You can then split on a serious rate/amount! thanks; sonny
