6 volt generator to 12 Volts

Postby Phillip W. Lenke » Wed Feb 03, 2010 1:02 pm

Ok here we go
Can a 6 volt generator be run 12 volts .
My brother says it has enough output
I can get the 6 volt gen. converted to a 12 volt for about $150
i do not plan to operate the lights for an extended period of time , but will operate them , hayrides , moving hay wagons etc.
I know to change out the bulbs
I am getting a 12 volt reg.
I do not want to put an alternator on. so that is not the option I am looking for

I've never done it to a cub, but 6 volt generators are just regulated 6v, the question is if the windings are sufficient to produce 12V at cub rpm. One way to test this would be to just replace the voltage regulator and measure the voltage under load.

The magnetic field in the generator is also something that would need to be considered, as 12 volt systems typically operate negative ground, I believe it can be repolarized to make this happen. My electric rebuilder did this on a porsche generator a few years back. But I never asked the technical specifics.

Phil - it can be done but the output current will be significantly reduced. Recharge time will be longer.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

It will be on our M
Talked to Josh Deputy jailer a few weeks ago, he said it can be done, just , i am not sure what need to be done.
BD , when you say longer time for charging what will this effect, Battery life , dimmer lights?
I guess I need to know the problems I may encounter.

Phil - with lights on etc. the generator will not keep up with the load. With the lights off, the recovery or recharge will take longer because the recharge current is lower. It is one of those things that you will just have to try to see what the results are. For an occasional use tractor it would probably not be a problem.
