Thoughts on 404 value

Postby Barnyard » Sat Aug 21, 2010 5:16 pm

I'm Thinking about selling one of my 404's. It has about 40% on the tires, runs good but could use a tune up. Tin is straight but paint would make it look good (I know, if you put lipstick on a pig you still have a pig). There is a growl that sounds like it is coming from one of the finals. It also has a 6' mower deck that needs spindle bearings. Any idea what this might be worth? I haven't seen any of these advertised for a while so I am left guessing.

Good point!

Actually I have two of these. The other one is in the garage at my rental house. The other has a 10-12 year old rebuit engine with very low hours. I was thinking of taking the new tires off the one shown and swapping on the ones from the stored tractor and selling this one. I figure I don't really need two 404's although that might be a lot since I never see any of them.

According to the 2005 Tractor Blue Book, the latest one I have, it lists the following prices:

Estimated value less repairs.

1960 Used trade-in, Avg. $960.00 High $1760.00 Used retail, Avg. $2680.00 High $3230.00

1961 Used trade-in, Avg. $1010.00 High $1820.00 Used retail, Avg. $2820.00 High $3360.00

1962 Used trade-in, Avg. $1010.00 High $1780.00 Used retail, Avg. $2870.00 High $3330.00

The above prices are for the tractor only. Of course it also depends where in the country you are. I hope this helps some.

Thank's Don, I knew I could count on you.

Jeff, thank's for the info. That is what I was looking for. I was talking to Darrel last night and he was in that $2,000.00+ range also. Your answer pretty much gives me an idea if I do sell.

This had been a state tractor and then sold (given) to our county. Our club bought it to maintain sixty acres of grass. It was used about eight times a year to mow our grounds and was pretty well cared for. I finally bought it when the club decided it didn't want it or it's twin which they bought from our local Village.

I will have to give the government ownership some consideration when I decide on the price.

Bill, I've seen them, around here, for $2500. Long way from you, so the price may be different, there. Ed

I have never seen a Farmall version in person. 404 International versions (utility) were pretty popular in our neighborhood. Wish I could add one to the collection one day. They were a nice handling 35-40 HP tractor.
