IH 454

Postby Bus Driver » Fri May 31, 2013 1:39 pm

Still looking for another tractor in the 35-50 HP range with low center of gravity. Ad for IH 454, stated to have shuttle shift. Sounds like a great feature. But how troublesome can it be? And how available and affordable are repair parts if there is a problem? These tractors are not of recent origin by any means.
I know the TA on the M Farmall can be troublesome and parts availability at times has been quite a problem.

Not sure how many on here have had any dealings with 454 shuttle, but if you go to Redpowermagazine.com or to the IH forum on ytmag.com you will get answers from experienced users. You may have to retype the links, I am using my tab.et, and it likes to add spaces.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

A little more research on my part shows that this model was offered for only 3 years and total production was less than 8000. Nebraska tests found no problems during the testing. Found a YouTube video of a shuttle on another model and it appeared to be just an extra lever that shifted gears for the purpose. That would require clutching and coming to a stop. If so, the system should not experience undue problems.
