Ok, with the Letter Series you got a tractor with a drawbar-no hydros etc...
With the super series you got hydros bit did you get a three point hitch as well? Or did the 3points come with the number series?

Actually the H , M, and C had hydraulics as an option, with the C being a touch control, while H and M had what is called a Lift All, which was a pump and reservoir, with the cylinders being external and attached to the lift mechanism of whatever implement you were using. B never had hydraulics, and A did not have them till the Super A, and then they were touch control. With the Supers, the Lift All was full time, so transmission did not have to be running as it did on the earlier H and M, and on the Super A the hydraulics were available as a touch control. In the mid 50s a fast hitch became available with the smaller tractors using a single point and the bigger ones using a 2 point. I do not know when 3 point became available on IH equipment, but in my opinion the fast hitch was a better system, however, IH would not license other companies to use it, so the 3 point became the standard.

That all sounds about right to me, John. Touch-Control was an option on both the C and Super A. In practice, you essentially never saw either model without it.
From when 2-point Fast-Hitch was available (1954 on Super C), they had a 2-point to 3-point adapter that worked with most 3-point implements. About '58, a 3-point Fast-Hitch was available for some models that effectively was much like the 2-to-3 adapters but had no Fast-Hitch sockets. In about '59 they released a "commercial 3-point hitch" with no draft control. It was intended mostly for highway mowers etc. The first true integrated 3-points with draft/traction control were about '61/'62 when the 404, 504 etc. models came out.

Of course that's only for American tractors.
You could get true 3pt hitches earlier than the 404/504 series if you bought one of the B-250's or B-450's that was imported to the USA. Both of these were manufactured in England. Either the patents for 3pt had expired or licensing was much more reasonable for 3pt in England, so IH tractors had 3pt hitches.
If you ever see a B-450 at a tractor show you can clearly see that it is a close relative to an M, with a direct-start diesel engine and a 3pt hitch unit in place of the M's usual platform.
