International 284 Gas?

Postby gitractorman » Tue Oct 20, 2015 8:03 am

Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with an IH 284 gas tractor? There's one for sale here locally that looks to be in very good condition. I'm looking for something to do a little brush hogging with, and wanted to try to stay in the IH family, but there's so many old Ford tractors around that they're about a dime a dozen. There's few of the smaller IH tractors, and I really didn't want to get into the bigger H, M, 350, 450, etc. machines just because I don't have the trailer to haul them or large overhead bays to work on them.

We have a Ford 9n at our hunting camp which we use for brush hogging the fields and trails. It is a decent machine, but just kind of lethargic for it's size. Also, the PTO setup and 3-point hitch setup is just stupid and annoying. I can see why there are so many for sale.

Thanks,
Bill

Not sure about the 284 gasser, but it may not be all IH! I was thinking it has the Mazda 626 sedan engine in it!---my Satoh has same engine in it!----good 25 hp and very snappy engine, sounds like a Detroit 71 series wound up!---It screams!---corse mine has Harley-Davidson decals on it and a big ole Harley hog muffler on it!----biggest problem is that a carb kit for the sucker is right at 100 bucks and has a million little parts in the thing!--another problem is the water pumps!---not sure if you can get them anymore! thanks; sonny

Thanks. Yea, it's a Mazda gas engine and I've heard that they're a bit expensive to repair. I've decided to pass on it. Think I'll wait and get back into a Farmall 100/130/140. There's a 140 across the street wasting away in a friend's barn, and I've let him know that I'm interested in it. He's just storing it for another guy, but it's been sitting for well over a year. Unfortunately, I know what the guy has spent on it and he has way too much invested in it.

Not pos either if the 284 was ALL IH or just IH tinwork and Mitch tractor with Mazda engine.---My 650-g is Jap Satoh tractor with Mazda engine!---Good tractor but on the parts side,----totally out of the question!---I just bought it to get the 3-pt. off it and was going to junk the rest of it ,but got it running fairly well, so ended up using it !---needs a water pump right now, and the only thing I can find is a kit for them.!---I DONT do water pumps, so after about 1 more season I think tractor will hit the landfill!---minus the 3-pt and new back tires! LOL! thanks; sonny
