Cold weather vs. warm weather with the 300

After having used it now for 2 years just curious about some stuff. When its warmer (read not winter) it starts right up, motor sounds good, but needs to warm up a little before I can go down the road in 5th. When its cold (I.e. winter) motor starts right up, however needs some choke, sounds rather rough till it warms up and it has to warm up before you can move.

Curious why does the motor sound so rough in the winter till it warms up? Does it have something to do with the volatility and vapor pressure of the gasoline in the winter?
