Todays project

Postby Steve Butram » Sun Dec 18, 2005 8:32 pm

I have been working in the shop this weekend trying to get this project further along It is an H farmall that will be on full steel. If you look real hard you can see the next project a 48 cub on the splitting stand waiting for it's turn for paint. Steve

I notice the H has radiator shutters. Is it a distillate tractor or gasoline that happens to have a shutter attachment?

Good looking start to your project.

Last year I went completelt through my H seeminly not leaving any stones unturned. Replaced all seals, put in (what I thought was a fresh rebuild) engine, completely went throught the tranny, and installed new clutch assembly. I did not paint however. Darn good thing. I wanted to get some time on the unit to make sure everything was right before I spent much time and money on the paint. Well heres a partial list of what went wrong:

Brandy new clutch pressure plate was defective and needed replaced.

Tranny input seal leaked like crazy and discovered we were sold the wrong one.

Both brake drum seals leak even though they were replaced and were doubled up.

Discovered my rebuilt engine had loose rod bushings ( making ticking noise) from shoty PO rebuild.

Governor housing cover leaks bad. Even though it was replaced too.

Overlooked both upper and lower bolster bushings that now are being replaced.

Basically I'm saying its risky in my opinion to paint a tractor till you know its right.
I'm going to wait till I've got everthing leak free and right before I invest in the shine.
I did blast and paint various stand alone items but have waited on the chasis til later.

Jim It is a gas tractor with the shutter attachment. Most of the H Farmall's in this area I have seen have the shutter attachment unfortunatly all the shutter has been removed and wasn't with the tractor.

WK. I agree with you on your statment but this tractor is my father in law's and he just wanted to paint it But I have went alot farther into it than he wanted to. If it were mine it would have been completely dissasembled and rebuilt but as we all know the FIL is always RIGHT.LOL

Country. You are correct I'm looking forward to getting this project done So I can get back on the 48. The H takes up 2X the area than a Cub. Steve

Hey Steve! Looking real good. Did you replace those upper and lower bolster bushings and steering gear seal while you got er down that far? Something else that could ruin a new paint job is the seals at the front of the tranny-upper drive shaft-lower pump drive.
