farmall h factory wide front ?

Postby brian kov » Sun Jan 18, 2009 8:53 pm

ih wide front for the farmall h . the first one.ih made 2 i have the first style . does any one know if i have to have the adapter plate to mount this axle under the tractor . it looks like it will bolt up but it seems like it will be too far foward . if i mount it forward will the steering arm still work . i am actually missing the steering arm and pin as well as the adapter plate ,so if i really dont need the adapter plate ,that would be one less hi priced hard to find part that i would need .any help wouldbe appreciated .i could only find one pic of this axle installed and the pic is kinda small.

As I recall, the earlier version had the adjustable wheelbase. The adapter plate was only needed to set it for the shorter wheelbase. I think the Parts Catalog will confirm this and spell out exactly what is needed for each configuration. If you don't have the book, look on the CaseIH web site.

i looked on the parts breakdown in the it shop manual , it was the same as the one on the case ih website . it shows the adapter plate but says nothing about the 2 differant wheel base lenghts . so if i use it without the adapter plate it would stick way out like a schwartz front end or not so much ?

On the CaseIH website, the early axle is listed as front axle attachment "with adjustable wheelbase". There is a note at the bottom of the parts list that addresses the plate. I don't know where the Schwartz axle ends up. In the long position, the IH axle is fairly far forward.

In the long position, the front axle is nearly even with the front edge of the grille. If you put the axle on like this, be careful that you do not bump into something.

Until I started regularly attending tractor shows about 15 or 20 years ago, I never saw anything except a narrow front on an H, and wide fronts look funny to me. :D

Somewhere, I have a photo I took years a go of a 39 M on cutoffs with a WF. The ealy Ih axle stuck out in front of the tractor. The tie rod was out infront of the axle. Grandpa Tom had a 47 M with the same axle configuration.

out of curiosity could the same action be taken on a c or super c as far as changing it to a wide front end? thanks

Hi Brian,

I wish I could make it out to the barn to check out how they could be mounted, but as I remember, Mike ('48) and Ike ('49) have the axle mounted in the rear position. Those I've seen with the axle mounted farther forward look really weird to me. Both axles are original IH early style.

Here's a closer shot of Mike...

My '51 M has a Schwartz axle. I think it's a bit more practical....

Looks to me like that axle is set in the short position. The adapter plate can be clearly seen in the picture. Flip over to about page 94. There are several pictures of an MD with an adapter plate in use.

thanks for all of the help , i looked at the other pics on the other page and i can see the adapter plate , i didnt know how thick it was .i thought it was fairly thin ,but after you point it out now i know what i am lookin at . is there a reason for the two differant length wheel bases ? probably some thing to do with belly mounting impliments of some sort .

We have an H with an IH factory wide front. We call that part your talking about the Set back plate. You can mount the axle with or without that plate. Without the plate the front sticks out really far and odd looking. Here's a picture of an MD compliments of the archives in the front mounted position:
Image
The plate itself is almost 3/4 inch thick and heavy. You could make it really easily if you had a pattern. I knew we should have traced ours when we had it off.
