6 volt distributor

Getting the 42 H back together ,have the casting painted, plan to do it up next year on the sheet metal, gives me all winter to straghten it and prep.
I am putting the distributor on , the drive shaft came out , How do you put it back to be sure it is timed correctly.
it is a 353898R1

Guessing, I don't understand the problem.

If the drive shaft is the one in the distributor, it is normally pinned to the distributor drive gear. The gear can only be pinned to the shaft in two locations - doesn't make a difference as long as the gear is not upside down.

If the drive shaft is the one in the distributor drive housing - again - only goes in two ways - doesn't make a difference.

It has been any years since I had an H distributor apart, but as I recall it is similar to a cub. So you would set engine on #1 TDC, then use the drive to turn rotor to #1 , then remove drive shaft and reinstall it to match the drive slots on the engine.

The part is out of the drive end of the Distributor. should it have been pinned in? , this is how I pulled it off the H , before restoration . SO ,this is on the PO

If the ignition points aren't in place and gap set, do that.
Insert the shaft into the distributor.
Hold the distributor assembly upright so the attachment bolt holes are at 6 and 12 o'clock.
Slowly rotate the shaft clockwise until you feel the slight resistance of the points cam touching the igniton points.
Check orientation of drive lugs on shaft, if not at 35 degrees from horizontal (roughly 4 - 10 o'clock) carefully pull out and reinstall at 4 -10 o'clock.
Repeat the last step until you get it right.

To answer your other question - no - that shaft is not pinned in. I'd hate to count the number of times I've dropped one out of the distributor.

NO. Not pinned. You need to seperate the distributor from the distributor drive housing. Install the part pictured above, then the distributor drive housing.

Engine TDC #1 cylinder. Rotor pointing to #1 spark plug tower location on the distributor. Install distributor so that it's centered in the adjusting slot and the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug tower location. Then static time engine.

I will not repeat what I said the first time I dropped one out of a distributor. I had always worked on magnetos and was working on neighbors distributor. Nearly had a heart attack

I would think if you get the tractor on TDC on no. 1 cylinder, then point the rotor to the no. 1 tower on the dist cap. then put the shaft back in so it matches up with the slot in the drive.

You need to follow my suggestion on installing the parts. One tooth off equals 10 degrees.
