Hi maybe you can help he I have a 1950 Model H Farm all last year I was going up a hill the tractor stalled could not get it started. Took the cap off the mag and found metal pieces and it would not turn. Put the tractor in my pole barn and found a rebuilt mag on ebay . Timed the engine tractor starts will not advance when started and when you turn the tractor off it will backfire. I was told the timing gears never go out of time? And was told to set the plug wires forward one spot the tractor will run and advance half throttle with no power and again will back fire when turning off . Could you give me any Ideas Thank You David

Third, a magneto does not have advance wights in it like a distributor, it is either retarded all the way for starting, or advanced all the way running. You should not be able to turn the rotor like you can in a distributor.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Well I plowed with it yesterday,,,1st or 2nd gear,,,no guts I think.Got intake and exhaust gaskets.....Thinking it might be sucking in some air, running lean.At least the garden is plowed.Discing is next,,hope to have it fixed by that time. :? :? :? Be nice to figure out whats wrong with it.I'd like to pull it at the tractor pull in town.David,,I pulled my dist and found it was out of time a couple of years ago. That helped it a bit.I have advancing weights and they move.Time to find TDC[top dead center] and start from there.Kevin

If you have an intake leak it is normally hard to start. What size plow and what kind of soil? We had an H with the high compression kit, 3 sets of wheel weights, plus fluid in the tires. It would pull two 16 inch plows in our red clay soil 8 inches deep with no trouble. the other H, was in good shape, but standard sleeves and pistons and 1 set of weights. In second gear the same pair of 16 inch plows would kill it out, and in 1st it would spin. We got a plow with two 14 inch bottoms for it, and it would do good in second, but really had to strain to plow in 3rd.
