Re: My 1945 Farmall H Makeover
Taking advantage of the lower humidity and heat last week, I finally got to shoot some red:
The yellow on the second pic is sunlight coming through my all-purpose canopy (aka, mulberry tree). Didn't want to paint sheet metal in full sun. Had some past experiences that didn't turn out well, so I try to paint sheet metal in the shade or on a overcast day. Didn't get any buggy-bugs on it, so worked out well.
Man! I do like shooting paint!!

Re: My 1945 Farmall H Makeover
Decided to go ahead an upholster the seat. Original How-To located here: http://www.farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewto ... 47&t=70582
Thanks to my wife, Robyn, who whipped out the seat cover quick! Here's the seat, pattern and cover:
Center line drawn, electric knife ready:
Two coats of spray adhesive on both the foam and seat, then set in place. Two coats of adhesive on the top of foam and the underside of cover, then set in place. Window cording tucked in place and opening closed with smooth-jaw channel locks:
Trimmed the excess and mounted:
Another seat, ready for use.

Yes and cut your hair real short before you begin...it'll be harder to get ahold of when you want to pull it out.

Re: My 1945 Farmall H Makeover
Discovered last week, just before putting 6 gallons of gear oil in the H, that there were remnants of metal bearings in the sludge. Hold the presses. A close inspection through the PTO port showed inner axle bearing damage at some point. Ordered new inner bearings and hoped that the outer bearings didn't need replacing too. I was right, inner bearings were toast, outer bearings looked good. Replace the oil seals and back on track.
Sure glad I opened the drain plug on the tranny before re-filling with oil. That would have caused huge problems down the road. Now, on to firing it up and applying decals.

Re: My 1945 Farmall H Makeover
With my dad falling on September 3rd and being in the hospital and skilled nursing care since, I haven't had much time to deal with the tractor. But did find some time to put the finished touches on applying decals and the nameplate.
Never had re-done a nameplate before, but thought it couldn't hurt to try. Original nameplate was completely void of paint or contrast. So, I washed it up with soap and water using an old toothbrush.
Next, I spray painted it with Krylon Gloss Black. Like my big RUN on the left side? That's what you get when you're painting black paint outside at night.
After it dried, I used a sanding block with a piece of padding and 220 grit sandpaper. The sanding touched some of the background, which was not intended, but not totally unwelcome. Thought the finished results made it look better, but still old and used.
A final 2 coats of Krylon Satin clear, dry time, then onto the tractor. Thought it turned out great and very readable!

Re: My 1945 Farmall H Makeover
Had some time over the weekend to finish up (somewhat). Decided to paint this H a little different; thought it turned out well.
Started up w/o a problem once I got the carb rebuilt and adjusted.
Will be ready for the 2015Red Gray Power Roundup in Sedalia, MO, June 13-15. Hope to see you there: http://rpru2015.com/
