'45 BN...water temp gauge location?

Postby wjwolfe82 » Mon Apr 19, 2021 9:35 am

Hello,
I've recently started working on my in-laws '45 BN. It's been in my wife's family since new but looking a little rough these days. It was sold new by her grandfather to an uncle who eventually gave it to her father. It hasn't run in at least 7 to 10 yrs...til now.
I replaced all the starter wiring (has dist & generator, 6v pos ground), battery cables, etc...cleaned the points and got her to fire up. She runs pretty good initially but I still have several things to get to...clean & maybe rebuild carb, check cooling, transmission, etc.
The 1st question I have is where does the water temp gauge mount? Somebody mounted it on the left side but sideways and cockeyed...pretty sure it's not correct. The wire is long enough that it could reach near the steering arm but there doesn't seem to be any place practical that it would have gone.
Internet searches have come up empty except that maybe it goes on the right side of the motor somewhere?

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

ahaa. The mounting bracket makes sense that way.
I'm curious why the sender wire is so long. Would it wind around the back of the motor? ...or maybe I've got an aftermarket one on that they slapped on there.
Thanks for the pic.

You probably have a gauge made for a newer tractor!
One probably made for a tractor with gauges around the steering column in a dash!
I would say that a water temp gauge on a B / BN is not too common!

That doesn't explain why it is mounted where it is on his tractor, which is what I thought he wanted to know.

The original question was "The 1st question I have is where does the water temp gauge mount?" I think the pictures answered that. It looks like this one is mounted with the original bracket, just bent and attached in the wrong place. The proper temperature gauge had a much shorter connection to the sensing bulb. It was just nicely long enough to reach from the bulb in the coolant inlet elbow, across the front to where the gauge head mounts. I believe it ran along the top edge of the timing gear cover.

Probably a gauge from a different tractor. The gauge for a C/Super C would have a longer sender. If there's a part number on the gauge it might help you narrow down what it's "supposed" to fit.

Is your B a kerosene/distillate burner? If not, they might've added the gauge later. On gas burners, the gauge and radiator shutter were an optional attachment.

It's a gas burner.
They must have added the gauge later. I'll look into getting the proper one.
Thanks all for the info. Exactly what I needed to know.

Barnyard, you did a great job showing the pics!

My reply is geared towards his second reply, listed above!

Look at the face of the gauge. I would say it is not from the era of the B /BN series tractors!

I wonder if his current gauge is electric where as Jim brought up the original being mechanical.
