? Regarding M/SM differences

I have completed the engine swap on the Farmall M and will post pics soon. What differences are there between the M and Super M ( I know that the bore is bigger) ? The reason I pose the question is that the engine that I installed has an oil filter much larger in diameter than the engine that I removed .
This made me wonder if I have a Super engine, I have not checked the casting nos yet. Also where is the best source to check the casting nos ?
I would appreciate any info.
Thanks, Berlin

Berlin - I believe the shorter oil filter was on the early H's and M's. I'm not sure when the change was made. My 46 H has the short one. The 48 H I used to have had the long one.

Super M block will have C-264 cast into the right side. Super M casting codes from '52 will end in X, '53 Y, Super M-TA '54 Z

On the oil filter sizes, there were 2 different diameters used on the M. The early ones had a larger diameter (same as the 9-series tractors). After a while they switched to a smaller diameter but it was still the tall filter. The filter base is bolted to the block and I think the two bases are interchangable on any M block. The Diesel engines all had the large diameter filter. I believe all Super M filters were the same as the later production M. The smaller diameter filter was the same size as the early H (and other early letter series tractors). The shorter H filter was the same diameter as the early filter, therefore the base didn't need to change. The short filter was used on many tractor models.

The changes in filter sizes corresponded to upgraded filter technology so filters could be made smaller and still do a better job.
