ok, the sun set on me and I had just enough time to drain the engine oil. Milky white as expected :| but ..........total oil drained was about 3 gallons :( The filter was pretty sludgy. I am hoping the previous owner just saw a dip in pressure do to the sludge and added more oil  I will know tomorrow as I am draining what coolant is in the radiator and then firing it up

changed oil with rotella 30 weight as recomended. Coolant actually looked pretty good although, the drain pipe was clogged with gunk at first and is stripped as the bolt will not tighten. Replaced plugs with autolite 386. Ran the engine for about five-seven minutes, then checked the oil. Dip stick has a very slight milky hint to it. opened the drain plug on the oil filter housing and it is a decent milky color. I would imagine this is normal for the first change?? All thoughts welcome of course. Did a compression test prior to running engine. #1-84, #2-80, #3-66?? did again #3-82, #4-89 This was all with four bumps of the needle.

Dipstick? Are you sure you're checking engine oil with that dipstick?

The Super M does not normally have a dipstick on the engine. You check the oil level by opening the petcocks on the side of the oil pan.

The only dipstick on a Super M would be the one in the belly pump hydraulic reservoir under the gas tank.

Odds are good that you will have to change the oil 2-3 times to get all the water contamination out, but you need to run it more than 5 minutes. The water isn't hurting anything really at this point.

Compression at cranking speed is low 90's on your engine, so you're not far off. Were those numbers "wet" or "dry" choke open? All the numbers are close, that makes a huge difference. A valve adjustment couldn't hurt anything while you're messin' around with it...

Like Matt said it'll take a couple changes to get that mess out. Take the ol' gal and get ger good and hot then dump that oil.

The engine that is in this tractor is actually yellow in color. I figure either someone painted it or it came from an industrial application. There is a screw in dip stick that is about a 1/4 inch diameter steel tube, located right side about middle of block. Ill try and get some pics. It has fresh oil on it. I have it firing right up but it misses and sputters on occasion throughout running and the throttle is very inconsistent It hangs high and hangs low, seems like the only smooth operation is in fifth gear? Would this be the carburetor or fuel pump? Never done a valve job/adj but there is always the first time.

Most of the manuals on CD that you will find on :eBay: are single page pdf's. They can be a bear. You would be far better off to purchase an original Owner's Manual, Service Manual and Parts Manual as well as the Special Equipment manuals for your Super M. Here is a search string for Farmall Super M Manuals.

If you decide on a reprint the best ones are as Jim stated found at Binder Books - Letter Series Manuals

Super M does not normally have a fuel pump. Fuel is gravity flow just like a Cub. If yours has a fuel pump then it's not a standard engine.

Sputtering may be dirty carburetor, need of a tuneup, or a simple timing adjustment.

Before tearing this tractor apart, get it some runtime with seafoam in the oil & gas. Let the seafoam do the cleaning.
