Questions on a SW6TA

Postby offrink » Mon Nov 03, 2014 9:05 pm

I'm looking into buying a SW6TA. The Owner says the TA is starting to slip in the low gear. If/when it goes out what is the costs of a mechanic to fix? I see that rebuilt TA's are about $600-650. Also he says that the rim is rusted out around the valve stem and he thinks the valve of the tube is ripped out. I can't find the cost of a tube anywhere let alone a rim. Any idea on parts for these? Can the valve be welded instead of replacing the whole thing? The tractor would be a deal if I don't have to put a ton of money into it!

If the rim is not rusted very bad it can be repaired. I have welded a metal patch over the rusted area and redrilled the valve stem hole through the patch. I have also patched a rim and drilled the hole in a different spot depending on the rim.
I just purchased a new rim and tube for my JD A project. The rim, a 10 x 38 was $ 200. The tube was $ 40. Don't know what size tires are on a SW6, but expect around $ 300 for a new one. Have not worked on a TA system yet so I can not say how much fun that would be.

Thanks for the response. The guy is out of twos on work for the rest of the month so I won't be seeing it until December at best. Don't really want to be messing with it to much in the freezing weather we will be having in December and on. Then I have a planned hospital stay for a month and be out for another two. Even though this is a great deal of $2000 with these being the only issues it's looking less and less like the tractor for me which is to bad. I may get it and just let it sit jacked up on one side until I get back on my feet.

One thing about the TA is that you can leave it in direct and it will run fine that way indefinitely, as long as the linkages are kept in adjustment.

Rims and tubes are best sourced locally. Shipping kills any deals you might find online.

Wish it were closer to me. I'd remove that temptation from your sight.

I don't know if it needs rear tires, but $300 seems low. I would expect 30" tires to be at least $400 to $500 per side.

The 300 dollar quote was for the rusty rim not a tire.

The tires look good but the rim will probably need to be replaced. Are these the same rims and tires as a M?

No, the H and M use 38" rims, and the SW6TA uses 30" rims.
