Farmall Cub

New addition to the herd...a 1937 F-12, French & Hecht full rounds, hydraulic cultivator lift and HA5 high altitude engine. It's an older restoration. Not running right now due to an unknown issue with the mag and I'm told has an issue with the fuel pump. I suspect the pushrod is worn, but won't know until I tear into it. Tractor was previously run off a small 12V battery and coil wired through the magneto.

It'll get fresh paint, decals and "detailed" this winter. Probably going dark charcoal gray with red wheels. It'll look sharp with all the copper, brass and aluminum polished up...

My F-12 hasn't turned out to be the easy project I thought it would be. Once home and closely inspected, the block was busted, patched, and busted again, the head was busted and countless other things. I've since located another engine and head, with matching tags sitting in a pasture for 30 years. I'm taking the old rusted engine and head and rebuilding them for the tractor. This is proving to be an expensive endeavor, and will likely be the most expensive F-12 ever restored LOL...it certainly was an expensive lesson. While it won't take hardly anything to clean up and paint, the mechanicals will be another story. The magneto is useless, not really even good enough for a core charge, much less a rebuild. But in the end...I'll have what I wanted, and sleep quite well

That f-12 will be nice when you are finished , most of my projects are much more involved than I think they will be at first evaluation. Looks good.

How's progress on the F-12 Dusti? Pictures?

Well no real current pictures, may get some this weekend. Not much progress the last few weeks. It's just to #$%& cold up there in the shop at night when I get in from work, and really haven't had a decent weekend to work on it in a couple weeks. On Saturday mornings you go up there and fire the heater and it takes forever for it to warm up, then the tractor starts sweating, so not only is it to cold to paint of anything...it's wet. Ya'll know how it is...

The engine block and head are at the machine shop, SUPPOSED to be done in another week or two, who knows. Once it comes back I can begin building the engine and get it back in the frame. The frame rails have been stripped, cleaned primed and painted with finish color on the inside, ready to put the steering brake linkage back in, then the short block. The outside of the frame rails have had probably a dozen coats of high build primer and have been wetsanded a half dozen times and are ready for finish coating, whenever that comes. The steering brake linkage has all been taken apart, cleaned, threads chased, and reassembled with antiseize and are ready to be repainted and put back in the inside frame rails.

I found another top radiator tank in Colorado to replace mine which had a broken air cleaner mounting ear. Both upper and lower tanks and rails have been cleaned, threads chased, primed and painted. I'm waiting on gaskets from The Fordson House to reassemble and mount the radiator. The back side of the steering pedestal and bolster, along with all the "interior" concealed parts of the radiator have been finish coated, as they won't be accessible to paint. The finish color is "McCormick Deering Gray" from the Fordson House. It's a dark bluish charcoal gray. I like it a lot. I've bought several cans in spray bombs for painting parts and pieces. Once it's all back together I'll shoot the whole thing with the same color which is available in gallons and with hardener.

I've reinstalled the power lift on the deck, all cleaned and painted under and between. If it's halfway tolerable in the shop tomorrow I may begin reinstalling the brake drums and linkage, though it'll likely be to cold to work on priming, filing and painting the covers.





I'm really hoping to have it finished by the IHCC Chapter 37 Show in May at the Got To Be NC Festival in Raleigh...I don't know...I got a long way to go, and a lot of money yet to spend

For what it's worth, here's a picture of the engine that is going back in it. Sitting in a cow pasture for nearly 25 years on a rotten pallet. Oil pan was almost rotted off. fortunate enough that it has a matching tag for the gas tank support, mine was missing. Picture tells the tale...obviously stuck, full of rust, but thankful not cracked or broken...

A few more picture from today with the frame rails finish primed and the radiator reassembled and mounted. Radiator was disassembled, cleaned, primed and painted with new gaskets and all new square head bolts. Frame rails got about 12 coats of high build primer, topped with dark gray primer that nearly matches the finish coat of McCormick Deering Gray.

Yeah, it's hard to work when it's cold out. You're doing a good job. It'll look nice when you're done.

It's getting there, bit by bit. Got the block back from the machine shop the other day. Time to order parts and start short blocking it while they finish the head.

Better hurry May 17th is coming up quick . I need to be telling my self that . Im no where near close to finishing the Cub Cadet

Matt I don't know if I'm gonna get done or not. It's not looking good, and I'm not gonna get in a hurry and rush it just to make the date. So it may just be Otis...we'll see how it goes the next month or so.
