IH Dealers of the past

Postby Jason (IL) » Sat Aug 03, 2013 9:56 pm

I found this site and thought I would share it.

I have been doing some research into my grandpa's old dealership and came across it. I know it was brought up a while ago by someone or this could even be the same.

I see they do not have Sparks Equipment we had here in Potosi, MO. Probably just as well, he put himself out of business due to his unscrupulous business dealings.

Also missing a pylon truck dealership and tractor dealership in Salisbury, NC, Concord Truck and Tractor became Moeller Truck and Tractor. Kannapolis had a Cadet dealership, and finally, I don't remember Landis ever selling anything IH. I'll have to check that.

I don't think some of the dealers listed for NC weren't really full-fledged dealers. At least not selling tractors/trucks. They must have been hardware/feed stores that maybe sold parts or something? I know for example there was no IH dealer in Burgaw or Warsaw, NC. They would most likely have been served by Wallace Motor & Implement Co. in Wallace.

Remember, 253685 was delivered to a hardware store. Don't know if it went through Carolina Tractor or not.

Interesting listing for what was an IH dealership in Manchester, CT.
"Unknown Dealer" located at 20 Tolland Turnpike.
According to the Property Records, it was built in 1954. The renovations occurred in the mid-80's as I recall - prior to my involvement with Cubs.
I need to talk to some of my wife's relatives to find out if they recall the name and owner of this dealership.

Here's a photo of it's current use;

That list shows 3 IH dealers in Potosi, 2 of which I have never heard of, the one I had heard of I never knew to sell tractors. The one I did know of that sold IH tractors is not listed. I wonder if that listing may have come from IH financing rather than IH sales dealers. IH, Ford, etc. provided financing for anything, not just that brand or type machine a dealer sold once once they signed up. In approximately 1973 I bought a Dodge van from the Dodge dealer and got Ford financing.
