When is a Cub Cadet no longer one?
...the saga begins in early 2010 with Aron finding a Cub Cadet 100 on ebay in Middleport, NY....out by Rochester, NY., a "small" detail he did not notice prior to bidding on and buying the tractor.
...so a weekend trip with an overnight at Cecil's and this is what Aron bought in June 2010.
Wiring was really messed up but with Cecils' and Scot Lemieux's help at CubFest 2010, he got it running but discovered a really bad knock that turned out to be a block that had been badly damaged by a blown cylinder wall.
After rebuilding the 10hp Kohler with a good block, he pulled in the 2011 4H Fair but realized the engine was underpowered. Repowering with a 12hp Kohler, 2012 was just OK as he broke the "meatball".
By now the imagination was really fired up. Brainstorming with Cecil and Scot, Aron moved ahead with replacing the "meatball", installing loboy final drives, thereby increasing the torque to the rear wheels substantially but really slowing the speed down. The results were that Aron took 2nd Place in 2013, pulling 5,000 lbs before breaking a front spindle. Back to the shop, he replaced the front axle with one from a 126 and took 1st Place in 2014, pulling 5,600 lbs. At 19 he aged out and "retired".
Aron sold the engine and heavy duty clutch to a 4H Club member and the tractor sat in pieces until Hannah decided it was high time for her to stop messing around with lawn mowers and roto-tillers.
...so in early 2017, fabrication began on a new front weight rack, engine cradle, and hand clutch. They installed a 16hp Onan Twin with a pulley and belt setup for the clutch since the Onan crankshaft sat much higher than a Kohler crank such that a Cub Cadet clutch would not work.
Hannah took 1st Place with a pull of 6,650 lbs
For 2018, Hannah and Aron needed to figure out a way to a) not lose traction, and b) keep the front end on the ground.
The new Deestone D405 26/12.00-12 tires from Simple Tire and 12x10.5 Rim Blanks from Miller along with some old 5-lug Jeep wheels along with cutting and welding by Hannah, should solve the traction issue.
Then to really go radical, they added 19" to the middle of the frame to get the engine weight further away from the rear end. The goal is to reduce the length of the weight rack and reduce the amount of weight necessary to make it easier to steer. Wheelbase is now the same as a Farmall Cub!
...more to come as this project continues.
Thanks for reading,
Peter

That’s awesome there thinking ahead to make improvements. These are strong little tractors stock. My cc 70 pulls over a 1/4 cord of firewood to the house some of the trail is up hill. That 8hp replacement engine goes right along.
You installed the 154 finals? The gear reduction or mechanical advantage must be awesome. I have two or three pairs of 154 finals here,

Re: When is a Cub Cadet no longer one?
I wonder if putting 29”-1250-15” Tru power ags on the rear would help?
Here’s mine, http://www.tractorshed.com/cgi-bin/gall ... os&cc=3&s=

I used 8” wide 15” jeep cj rims and the cc wheel weights still fit the 15” rims. I welded the 15” rims to the fcub wheel centers.

Bill,
Aron used International Cub Loboy finals, basically a 9:1 reduction.

Does he use first gear when pulling? Meaning with the finals it might be too low.

The Deestone tires look very similar to yours.

Hannah uses 1st gear to pull, as did Aron.
The club uses a steel sled that weighs 200lbs.
The concrete blocks are 8" x 8" x 36" and weigh 150lbs each.
The pulling pad is a ball field clay mix.

One of my fondest CubFest memories was working with Aron on removing and replacing (twice) a Cub transmission. He never backed away, was eager, and extremely respectful. As for the twice, Aron and I were in charge of removing and replacing the transmission, others were responsible for the rebuild.

I have the 26” destine thread pattern tires on my 100 with the tiller. I used the three rib tires on the front so it steers better. Before the front tires the front end wasn’t steer or tracking very well.

I use these tires on my cc100 with the tiller.
download/file.php?id=36080&mode=view
With the three rib tires up front for improved steering with more grip on the rear she has less wheel spin if any on the freshly tilled soil.
Can you load the rear tires and add rear wheel weights? Maybe weights inside the frame extensions?

Re: When is a Cub Cadet no longer one?
Bill,
No need to load the rear tires or use rear wheel weights. The downward force created with the hitch point close in and higher than the rear axle puts all the weight of the sled on the rear tires. Need lots of weight up front to keep it on the ground so the rotation of the rear tires creates forward movement. By stretching the frame, the engine weight will be further away from the rear axle thereby increasing the effective downward force of its weight plus any additional weight on the front weight rack.
Aron bought a running 19.9hp Onan Twin for $60 that was on a John Deere, so the power is up by 4hp from what was on it last year.
