124 steering wheel removal

Postby John Lane » Fri Mar 02, 2007 10:35 pm

Can anyone give me a tip for removing the steering wheel on a 124? The nut came off easily, but the steering wheel will not budge. The hub of the steering wheel is a soft material and I am afraid of breaking or warping it by using a puller. I have tried Kroil but so far have had no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Soak for a while with solvent. Replace the nut. Not tight, just enough to cover the end of the threads. Small piece of 2x4 to fit inside the steering wheel center. Pull on the steering wheel and have someone rap on the 2x4 with a hammer.

Usually one or two raps will loosen up the steering wheel.

I usually sit in the seat and wedge my knees up under the steering wheel - putting upward pressure on the steering wheel. Then use the block of wood and hammer.

Hey John...Once you get it off...be sure to lube the steering shaft splines & the wheel splines so you'll have aneasy time of it removing it in the future :!:
