IH hedge trimmer. Any Info?

Postby tractorfan1 » Sat Mar 17, 2007 12:13 pm

Hi guys,

I cant seem to find any info on my IH hedge trimmer on the net. I assume it was part of the cub cadet's product line, but im not sure. Does anyone know what years these were made, and does anyone have a brochure which has these in it? Also did they have any other power tools besides these? Thank's to all that can help.

Also is this one on ebay a fake? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150102929814

Now that is an interesting product. I didn't know they made those, but hey.. it would kind of make sense. IH even had a Cub Cadet Walk Behind Mower.. similar to a Canadiana or a Noma  :? :!:

Could it be possible then that the IH Electric Hedge Trimmers would have ben made by Black and Decker :?: :!:  :?: That would make good sense.

We all know that IH did farm out some stuff. It would also have made sense to have Brand Labeled Contract Manufacturing instead of tooling up a complete assembly line to make injection moulded housings and of course the electrics themselves... :?:

Sir James :!: Input please  :!: :D

I have a rockwell hedge trimmer which is identical to the IH, same colors as the one in the eBay ad. But I dont think the one on eBay was sold by IH. But who knows... :?

IH did have hedge trimmers, lawn sprayers, and push mowers. I have one of the hedge trimmers that my dad bought new, and they still work like new. We had one of the push mowers, and yes, the 2-cycle ones were built by lawn boy, and lasted forever. IH also sold jacks, gas cans, and a full line of mechanics tools, tool boxes, battery chargers, pressure washers, etc. Most of these were built in the mid 1970s, through the end of the IH years 1983/1984.

As for manuals, I have not seen one for many years.

On the top of page 120 of Ken Updike's "Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet," there is a brochure photo from 1980 showing the whole lineup of IH garden equipment. I think Ken's othe book has the same photo in a whole page, but I cannot find it at the moment. Anyway, in the photo you can see the push mowers, tools, pressure washers, etc.

I found the parts break down for the IH Push Mowers(1971 oldest listed) 21" Push Mower IH. ID. #333-Built 1971 on C&G site which is the Lawn Boy of that era. I did a search for Hedge trimmers and nothing came up. I searched for hedge trimmers/clippers and only found an IH Edger(1969). They were probably B&D and they just used B&D numbers for repair parts.
The Geezer from IHregistry.com which crashed and is now Cub Cadet Collectors.

Brett,
My set is exactly like the one you have pictured, except mine has a 23" bar.

Here is the page from Ken's book, "Farmall Cub & Cub Cadet". This is the photo from the beginning of Chapter 8, on pages 176 and 177. Both books are excellent.

I'll grab a picture of mine, as soon as I can clear a path through the snow to the barn.

I cannot decide if that green one on e-bay is original or not. I cannot imagine why IH would have ever done them in green/yellow. Everything I have ever seen from IH was either red, white, black, or yellow. My guess is someone switched stickers onto a B&D like others have mentioned.

Bill, dont worry about the picture. I too think that trimmer on ebay is fake. Does your's look like mine only with a longer bar? TIA.

Brett,
Yes, mine is identical to yours, just with a longer bar. I believe that mine still has the yellow and red lettering on the top of the bar, but I have not looked real close at it for a couple of years.
I know that I lent it to a friend to trim some bushes, and he slipped and cut a 1" gash in the fat part of his hand near his thumb. That was through leather work gloves. It cost him about 10 stitches. I had warned him that it was sharp
