982 Tiller...direction of travel?

Postby Ida Red » Tue May 11, 2010 5:36 am

Will a MF 550 Tiller , 3pt rear mount unit fit on a 982. Is the direction of PTO travel the same?

I'm only guessing, but I'd say no.

The 982 PTO is 2000 rpm and I believe it turns in the wrong direction, whichever way that may be? If the MF tiller is a 2000 RPM turning in the appropriate direction and the splined shaft fits, it would work. I'm going to say that the probability is low.

The PTO on a 982 is driven off the back of the hydro pump and turns the same direction as the engine, clockwise, but it turns at 2000 RPM, is 1' in diameter with 15 splines, and is a non-standard size and speed. The 3 point hitch is a Category "0". I would think the hitch on the MF 550 is for a Cat '1' or higher. The lift on the 982 has a lift capacity of 400 lbs at a point 12" behind the implement mounting point. The correct 982 tiller weighs less than 300 lbs and requires a front weight bracket on the tractor, with a minium of 3, 42 lb weights. With enough welding rod you can make anything fit anything...........but how well it works after you do so is something else. You would probably be money ahead to find the correct tiller.
